Family law and legal aid

Legal aid is provided by the Legal Aid Agency. Legal aid is the access to public funds to pay for your lawyer and court fees, in part or in full.

You cannot get legal aid for general divorce proceedings.

You can obtain legal aid for some family matters such as:

  • Mediation
  • Non-molestation and Occupation Orders
  • Child Arrangement Orders or Prohibited Steps Orders if you or your child has experienced domestic violence or abuse
  • Challenging a local authority Care Order
